Uruguay returns to GDC to showcase the talent and creativity that characterizes its young, thriving video game industry

February 15, 2022 –  The Latin American country’s participation in the exhibition will also be the occasion for the launch of the website uruguayvideogames.com, which brings together the best of a
professional, passionate and productive sector.

Uruguay will be present at the world’s largest annual meeting of professional videogame developers, the Game Developers Conference (GDC), with a country stand where it will showcase its flourishing industry. It will also be the opportunity to present its new website uruguayvideogames.com, a place of reference where you can learn about the country’s video game sector, along with information about studios, developers, projects and upcoming releases.

The first country in Latin America to offer university degrees on this field, Uruguay has earned a place at the international level thanks to the success of several video games that have topped the rankings of app stores and achieved visibility on the best platforms in the world.

Among other international awards, the most prominent is “best game in Latin America” for the Kingdom Rush and Iron Marines sagas by Ironhide Game Studio at the Brazilian BIG festival, with more than 10 million downloads.

Uruguay offers an excellent ecosystem for the development of this industry and stands out as reliable and safe place to do business with important incentives and the widest internet coverage in Latin America.

The success of the sector in Uruguay is also confirmed by its growth -from 2013 to 2020 the number of companies increased 100%- and the several million downloads of games created in the country. In addition, it managed to attract foreign companies such as the Argentinean Etermax and Globant, or the American Jam City, which choose the country as the center of their operations due to the significant advantages it offers for doing business with the rest of Latin America and the world.

Now Uruguay returns to the GDC, where for the first time it will have in-person presence with a country stand coordinated by the Investment, Export and Country Image Promotion Agency, Uruguay XXI, and the Uruguayan Chamber of Video Game Developers (CAVI). Last year was the first time that the country had an institutional presence at this event based in San Francisco, California, but on that occasion the activity was carried out in virtual format.

The delegation, made up of 14 studios and developers, plus institutional officials who will provide support to the visit and represent 12 other projects that will have a virtual presence, will seek to demonstrate their innovative profile, creativity and qualified talent to develop the best video games for mobile platforms, PC or consoles.

The GDC represents an opportunity for developers and industry professionals to showcase their projects and services, in addition to the virtues that make Uruguay an outstanding ecosystem for the development of this industry.

URUGUAYAN VIDEO GAMES MULTI-NOMINATED IN THE LARGEST LATIN AMERICAN EVENT OF THE INDUSTRY

Uruguay will participate with a virtual stand at the tenth edition of BIG Festival, the annual event for developers and players in the videogame sector that takes place in Brazil from July 7 to 10. The country will also have a presence in the official networks and communications of the event with its website Uruguay Video Games.

This event is the most important platform in Latin America for the sector. More than 120 games will be exhibited there, in addition to launches of the main companies in the sector.

The event represents a unique opportunity to live the gaming experience and interact with its developers. There will also be exhibitions of great referents such as the art director of League of Legends, David K. Lam, and the main designer of Final Fantasy, Takashi Tokita, among others.

As part of the festival, different activities and a meeting will be held at the headquarters of the Consulate General of Uruguay in Brazil. These initiatives will be coordinated by specialists from the consulate, the Uruguayan Chamber of Video Game Developers (CAVI) and Uruguay XXI, who will also support the commercial efforts of the studios that travel and promote the projects of developers who do not participate in person.

Uruguayan talent reaffirms its place in the industry at a global level with two multi-nominated games at BIG Festival: Rubber Duck Games studio in the Best Game Latin America, Best Narrative, Best Gameplay and Best Sound categories for its game Evil Wizard, and also Ironihide Game Studio for Best Game Latin America and Best Game Mobile with Legends of Kingdom Rush.
